The place Subsequent For The Particular One……

Although the headlines this week were dominated by the travesty that was the European Super League, what announcement did stay in the shadows was the dismissal of Jose Mourinho from Tottenham Hotspur. After seventeen months in charge of the North London Club the Portuguese replaced Mauricio Pochettino as manager in November 2019 and guided the club to sixth in the Premier League last season. Currently sitting seventh and only five points off fourth place, Daniel Levy still felt it was time to relieve Jose of his duties and at questionable timing with a cup final only six days away. Spurs went on to lose the final and no blame can be thrown towards interim manager Ryan Mason as it was a performance that the players must accept and reflect on, and it was simply not good enough for a final.

So the question is, where next for Jose? There have been recent links to Celtic, Bayern Munich or a potential return to his former club FC Porto if they fail to to win the Primeira Liga this season. There has also been strong link with Jose taking charge of the Portuguese National Team after the Summer, but it would be a cruel decision to remove Fernando Santos from the current post after his success over the last five years. He was quoted saying he’ll always remain in football after his departure, which was a strong message to those clubs looking for an elite manager with a CV like his. However there have been strong words from those in Football stating that the game has moved on from Joe and that he’s lost his touch. I still believe he has one more club position in him and one more opportunity to attack domestic and European competitions. Whether this be in the Premier League, French League, Italian League etc. I still believe this man can produce silverware. There is no doubt that Manchester United and Spurs had pushed Jose to his emotional limits and it appears he does struggle with the modern superstars. Whether it be Paul Pogba or Dele Alli, there will always be one big earner who will be on the end of a Jose Mourinho rant and one who will see more of the bench than they will the grass. So with that in mind could the unlikely happen where Jose Mourinho takes on a managerial role at a club that are not one of the bigger forces in a league, and posses certain personnel who would be in such awe of a man who has achieved as much as he has. I think of clubs such as Aston Villa, Newcastle, Marsielle, Bayer Leverkusen, Roma, Fiorentina. Clubs with a strong history, great support but with certain expectations. He could turn these teams into strong units and bring elements of winning mentality and hope. With less pressure it would be very interesting to see what this man could achieve and it would be great to see him have his swagger back.

Love him or hate him you can’t dispute what Jose has won in his time and I still believe he’s still got much more to give to this game. Whichever club takes him on next will take on a winner and personally I would love to see him back in the Premier League sooner rather than later……
